Richard Roland Holst’s Apollo – Costume Design presents the Greek god of music and poetry as an elegant, almost otherworldly figure. Apollo stands in profile holding a classical lyre, dressed in a flowing white garment inspired by ancient Greek drapery and crowned with a distinctive winged headpiece. Created in 1910, the design was part of Roland Holst’s work for theatrical productions inspired by classical mythology. His costume studies were not simply exercises in historical reconstruction; they translated mythological figures into highly stylized modern designs, using simplified silhouettes, symbolic attributes, and flowing decorative lines.
