Astronaut John W. Young on the Moon – Apollo 16 Mission – NASA (1972) – Space Age Canvas Print

This iconic NASA photograph captures Apollo 16 commander John W. Young saluting the American flag at the Descartes landing site on April 21, 1972. Photographed by lunar module pilot Charles M. Duke Jr. during the mission’s first lunar excursion, Young stands beside the flag with the Lunar Module Orion and Lunar Roving Vehicle visible behind him. Apollo 16 was the fifth mission to land astronauts on the Moon and was devoted primarily to exploring the lunar highlands and investigating their geological history.

The photograph brings together several defining elements of the later Apollo missions: the astronaut, flag, lunar module, rover, and stark highland landscape, with the deep black sky emphasizing the otherworldly setting. Young and Duke spent more than 20 hours exploring the surface, traveling 16.6 miles by rover and returning 209 pounds of lunar rocks and soil to Earth.
