Black Calla Lilies – Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1912) – Art Deco Canvas Print

Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita’s Black Calla Lilies combines the human figure, botanical imagery, and geometric ornament into an exceptionally sophisticated composition. A nude woman bends gracefully behind an ornate vase filled with sweeping calla lilies, her elongated profile echoed by the flowers’ long stems and sculptural leaves. Behind her, an intricate geometric pattern fills the background with a dense lattice of stars and intersecting lines, creating a striking contrast between the organic curves of the figure and flowers and the rigid geometry of the surrounding design.

De Mesquita was one of the Netherlands’ most distinctive graphic artists of the early 20th century, renowned particularly for his woodcuts and highly stylized treatment of natural forms. The stark black-and-white palette, decorative patterning, flowing contours, and deliberate flattening of space give Black Calla Lilies a powerful Art Nouveau character while anticipating the more geometric aesthetic that would emerge in Art Deco. The work demonstrates his remarkable ability to transform a simple arrangement of figure and flowers into an almost architectural composition.
