Botanical Pochoir Pattern in Oriental style – E. A. Séguy (1914) – Art Nouveau Poster Print

This richly stylized botanical design by E. A. Seguy transforms flowers and foliage into an intricate ornamental pattern. A central flowering plant rises from a network of curling stems, surrounded by spiky leaves, rounded red blossoms, and delicate scrolling forms. The limited palette of deep navy, emerald green, vivid red, and silver-gray gives the composition a particularly striking graphic character, balancing the organic forms of Art Nouveau with the bold simplification that would soon become associated with Art Deco.

The design is Plate 19 from Seguy’s Samarkande: 20 Compositions en couleurs dans le Style Oriental, a portfolio published in Paris by Charles Massin around 1914. The twenty pochoir plates were created as ornamental designs, probably for applications such as textiles or wallpapers, and drew inspiration from the decorative traditions associated with Samarkand and Central Asia. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the portfolio as an especially interesting intersection of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with Seguy’s study of nature translated into vivid, semi-abstract decorative forms.
