Caresse-Moi Donc, Chéri – Auguste Rodin (1902) – Vintage Lithograph Canvas Print

Auguste Rodin’s Caresse-moi donc, cheri! captures the human figure with the extraordinary economy of line that distinguished his drawings. Seen from behind, a nude woman raises her arms above her head in a pose that suggests both intimacy and movement, her body defined by delicate contours and translucent washes of warm color. The loose handling of the figure gives the work an almost spontaneous quality, as though Rodin captured a fleeting gesture rather than constructed a formal study.

Created in 1902, the work belongs to Rodin’s series of illustrations inspired by Octave Mirbeau’s novel Le Jardin des supplices (The Garden of Tortures). The phrase “Caresse-moi donc, cheri!” (“Caress me, darling!”) comes directly from the novel, spoken by the character Clara. Rodin produced numerous drawings and prints for the book, exploring the sensuality, movement, and expressive possibilities of the human body with remarkably fluid linework. The Metropolitan Museum of Art records a 1902 lithographic version of the work, with Auguste Clot as lithographer, while the Musee Rodin preserves related original drawings from the series.
