Charles Conrad Jr., Skylab 2 Commander – NASA, Paul Fjeld (1973) – Space Age Canvas Print

Paul Fjeld’s Charles Conrad Jr., Skylab 2 Commander depicts astronaut Charles “Pete” Conrad during the first crewed mission to Skylab, America’s first space station. The artwork shows Conrad performing an extravehicular activity outside the orbital workshop, with Earth stretching beneath him and Skylab’s large solar arrays dominating the scene. Created during the mission’s 1973 operations, the illustration captures the experimental character of Skylab, where astronauts were learning how to live and work for extended periods in Earth orbit.

Skylab 2 was far more than a routine space-station mission: the crew arrived to find the station seriously damaged after launch, with its micrometeoroid shield torn away and one of its solar arrays lost while another was jammed. Conrad, along with science pilot Joseph Kerwin, ultimately conducted a 3-hour-25-minute spacewalk to free the remaining solar array, restoring critical electrical power to the station. The repairs allowed Skylab to become a productive scientific laboratory, and Conrad, Kerwin, and pilot Paul Weitz went on to spend 28 days in orbit: the longest U.S. human spaceflight to that point.
