Crystal Gradation – Paul Klee (1921) – Art Deco Canvas Print

Paul Klee’s Crystal Gradation transforms geometric forms and subtle shifts of color into an intricate, almost crystalline structure. Angular planes, overlapping shapes, concentric curves, and bands of black, gray, dusty rose, and pale blue seem to fold into and through one another, creating an ambiguous space that oscillates between flat pattern and three-dimensional depth. The restrained palette gives the composition an elegant, atmospheric quality, while the carefully arranged forms reveal Klee’s fascination with the relationship between geometry, color, and visual rhythm.

Painted in 1921 during Klee’s first year teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Crystal Gradation reflects his increasingly systematic exploration of color and form. Klee developed a distinctive approach to abstraction in which geometric structures provided an underlying framework without eliminating the intuitive, organic qualities of painting. The result is a sophisticated example of early Bauhaus-era abstraction, with the crystalline forms and muted palette giving the work a particularly refined Art Deco-adjacent character.
