This detailed NASA cutaway illustration by Davis Meltzer, created in April 1975, depicts the planned moment when the American Apollo and Soviet Soyuz crews would meet in orbit during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). The cutaway reveals both spacecraft in extraordinary detail, with the three American astronauts distributed between the Apollo Command Module and the specially constructed Docking Module, while the two Soviet cosmonauts occupy the Soyuz Orbital Module. At the center, mission commanders Thomas Stafford and Alexei Leonov are shown shaking hands through the hatchway: the symbolic “handshake in space” that became the defining image of the mission.

The illustration also makes clear just how much engineering was required to make that meeting possible. Apollo and Soyuz used different docking systems and atmospheric conditions, so NASA developed a dedicated Docking Module that functioned as both an airlock and transfer passage between the spacecraft. The module incorporated a compatible docking system that allowed the two very different vehicles to physically connect in orbit. When ASTP actually flew in July 1975, Apollo and Soyuz docked for approximately 44 hours, during which the five astronauts and cosmonauts visited each other’s spacecraft and conducted joint experiments.

As a piece of Space Age imagery, the cutaway is particularly compelling because it combines technical illustration with a genuinely historic human encounter. The exposed interiors, crews moving through the docking tunnel, and Earth filling the background turn what could have been a dry engineering diagram into a vivid visualization of the first international human spaceflight partnership: a mission that helped establish the cooperative practices that would eventually extend into Shuttle-Mir and the International Space Station.
