Created in 1917 by illustrator Harry Ryle Hopps, “Destroy this Mad Brute – Enlist” is one of the most infamous and visually aggressive propaganda posters of World War I. The image depicts a monstrous ape wearing a helmet labeled “Militarism,” carrying a bloodied club marked “Kultur” while abducting a terrified woman across a devastated landscape.
The poster was designed to stir outrage and fear by portraying Germany as a savage threat to civilization itself. Its exaggerated imagery reflected wartime propaganda tactics of the era, using shock and emotional intensity to encourage American enlistment after the United States entered the war in 1917.
With its dramatic composition, distorted symbolism, and unforgettable central figure, the poster became one of the defining recruitment images of World War I. Today it remains a striking example of early twentieth-century propaganda art and a powerful artifact of wartime visual culture.
