Created during the Second World War by illustrator Peter Fraser, “Dig On for Victory” was part of Britain’s enormously successful “Dig for Victory” campaign, which encouraged civilians to grow their own food throughout the war years. Produced between roughly 1939 and 1946, the poster reflects the British government’s effort to combat food shortages, reduce dependence on imports, and strengthen morale on the home front during wartime rationing.
The design features a cheerful gardener striding forward with freshly harvested vegetables, a pitchfork over his shoulder, and a basket overflowing with produce. Against a clean sky-blue background and bold red lettering, the composition communicates optimism, resilience, and the idea that ordinary citizens could contribute directly to the national war effort through agriculture and self-sufficiency.
Unlike more dramatic military propaganda posters of the era, “Dig On for Victory” focuses on everyday civilian participation and community spirit. The image transforms gardening into an act of patriotism, reinforcing the message that victory depended not only on soldiers abroad, but also on the labor and discipline of civilians at home.
The broader “Dig for Victory” campaign became one of the defining visual and cultural movements of the British home front during World War II. Parks, schoolyards, and private lawns across Britain were converted into vegetable gardens to help sustain the population through years of rationing and supply disruption.
