Diploma for Loyal Service at Calvé-Delft – Richard Roland Holst (1924) – Art Deco Canvas Print

Designed by Dutch artist Richard Roland Holst in 1924, this elaborate diploma was created to commemorate long and faithful service at the Dutch Calvé-Delft company. Holst was a major figure in Dutch decorative art, known for his monumental compositions, graphic work, and synthesis of symbolism with the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement. Here, a formal commemorative document becomes a work of art, combining typography, allegorical imagery, and carefully ordered ornament.

At the center, a winged classical figure strides forward carrying a wreath decorated with the Dutch flag, surrounded by symbols of commerce, industry, and achievement. The bold red, black, and cream palette, geometric borders, stylized ornament, and highly decorative lettering give the composition a distinctly modern appearance, while the classical figure and heraldic motifs connect it to older traditions of European allegorical design. The result is a striking example of Dutch decorative graphic art from the early 1920s, poised between Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and the emerging Art Deco aesthetic.
