Also from The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, Shono Hakuu is one of Hiroshige’s most viscerally immediate images and one of the most influential prints ever made. A sudden squall has overtaken a group of travelers on a hillside road: they lean into the wind, clutching straw capes and umbrellas that offer little defense against rain falling in near-horizontal sheets across the composition. Every figure is in motion, bent forward with the particular urgent purposefulness of people caught completely unprepared by weather. There is no shelter in sight. The dark mountains loom behind them, half-dissolved in the downpour, and the bamboo at the roadside whips sideways in the gale. Hiroshige doesn’t depict rain so much as recreate the sensation of being caught in it.

The print’s technical achievement is considerable. The rain is rendered as dense diagonal lines crossing the entire composition: a simple device that somehow conveys both velocity and volume with complete conviction. Beneath it, the palette shifts from the warm greens of the hillside through layers of grey and charcoal as the storm swallows the landscape, while the travelers’ straw yellows and flashes of indigo provide the only warmth in an increasingly monochrome world. It is a masterclass in atmosphere.

When Van Gogh encountered this print in the 1880s, he was so struck by Hiroshige’s rain lines that he made his own oil painting copy of it; one of the clearest testaments to the work’s cross-cultural power. As a print, Shono Hakuu brings drama and movement to any wall, its diagonal energy giving it a restless vitality that few landscape prints can match.
