Eros – Robe et Manteau pour le soir, de Worth – George Barbier (1924) – Art Deco Poster Print

George Barbier frames an elegant evening ensemble against the classical figure of Eros, transforming a fashion presentation into a refined dialogue between antiquity and modern couture. Two women stand beside a tall architectural pedestal: one presents a flowing evening gown with a long train, while the other wears a sculptural evening mantle with a dramatic, fringed hem. Their carefully arranged poses, cropped hairstyles, elongated proportions, and restrained expressions give the composition the poised artificiality characteristic of Barbier’s fashion illustrations. Muted gray, olive, brown, and violet tones are punctuated by touches of turquoise and coral, while the rose held aloft by the woman in the gown provides a delicate focal accent.

The classical reference is rendered with the same graphic sophistication as the clothing itself. Eros appears almost monumental against the largely unadorned background, while the tall column creates a strong vertical axis that emphasizes the slender silhouettes of the figures. Barbier’s precise linework, flattened forms, decorative patterning, and deliberate balance of classical imagery with contemporary fashion exemplify the elegant synthesis of tradition and modernity that defined 1920s Art Deco illustration.
