Created in 1917 by celebrated illustrator Howard Chandler Christy, “Fight or Buy Bonds – Third Liberty Loan” is one of the defining propaganda posters of World War I America. Produced to support the Third Liberty Loan campaign, the poster urged civilians to contribute financially to the war effort by purchasing government bonds if they could not serve directly in combat.
The composition features a dramatic allegorical female figure carrying the American flag above advancing soldiers, combining patriotic symbolism with emotional urgency. Christy’s idealized heroine, often referred to as a “Christy Girl,” embodies courage, liberty, and national unity, while the charging troops in the background reinforce the direct connection between public financial support and the battlefield effort overseas.
With its flowing movement, vivid red, white, and blue palette, and powerful wartime messaging, the poster became one of the most recognizable images of the Liberty Loan campaigns. It reflects the bold visual style that defined American wartime advertising during the early twentieth century and helped shape the language of modern propaganda art.
Today, the work remains highly sought after by collectors of World War I memorabilia, patriotic Americana, vintage illustration, and historic political posters.
