Fly TWA – San Francisco – David Klein (1957) – Vintage Travel Poster Print

David Klein’s Fly TWA – San Francisco turns the Golden Gate Bridge into a dazzling study of modern architecture, color, and movement. The bridge stretches across the entire composition in an exaggerated geometric arrangement of towering orange-red cables and vertical lines, while the landscape beneath it dissolves into stylized bands of green, blue, yellow, and white. A tiny airplane crosses the upper portion of the design, providing a direct visual link between the monumental bridge and the promise of air travel. Klein’s brilliant palette and sharply simplified forms give the poster a distinctly mid-century modern character, transforming one of San Francisco’s most recognizable landmarks into an almost abstract composition.

The poster was part of Trans World Airlines’ celebrated destination advertising, in which Klein developed highly imaginative interpretations of cities around the world. Rather than presenting San Francisco as a conventional cityscape, he makes the Golden Gate Bridge itself the destination, emphasizing its extraordinary scale and engineering through an almost architectural abstraction. The tiny ship, rolling hills, and distant landscape provide just enough recognizable detail to establish the setting, while the enormous bridge cables create a powerful sense of vertical and diagonal movement.
