Geboorte van Venus (The Birth of Venus) presents the classical goddess in a distinctly modern, stylized form. Emerging from the water with her arms extended and hair streaming around her, Venus is rendered as an elongated, sculptural figure surrounded by swirling waves and atmospheric forms.
Richard Roland Holst reduces the figure and landscape to expressive lines and simplified shapes, creating a composition that feels both mythological and graphic. The limited palette of warm ochre and cream gives the work an earthy, almost antique character, while the fluid contours of Venus’s hair and the surrounding water introduce a strong sense of movement.
Created in 1924, the work reflects the period’s renewed fascination with classical subjects while embracing the stylization and decorative geometry of the Art Deco era. Its combination of mythology, elegant linear forms, and restrained color makes Geboorte van Venus a striking example of Dutch decorative art from the 1920s.
