Charles Martin’s Carrosse Automobile de Grand Gala imagines the automobile as a luxurious modern successor to the grand ceremonial carriage. The elongated vehicle combines the mechanical chassis and large wheels of an early motorcar with the enclosed passenger compartment, upholstered interior, and decorative fittings of an elaborate coach. Richly ornamented lamps, oval windows, striped paneling, and refined gold and brown details give the vehicle the character of a private salon on wheels, while the deliberately streamlined silhouette hints at the rapidly changing relationship between fashion, technology, and modern life.
Published as Plate 53 of the June 1914 issue of Gazette du Bon Ton, the design is an especially interesting example of the magazine’s willingness to treat fashion as a broader expression of modern luxury. Rather than depicting a particular garment, Martin imagines an entire object of fashionable transportation, rendered through the flat planes, restrained palette, and elegant decorative geometry characteristic of his early work. The Rijksmuseum identifies it as a pochoir print after a design by Martin and describes it specifically as an automobile in the form of a carriage intended for gala occasions.
