Grasshopper and Morning Glory Vine – Utagawa Hiroshige (1835) – Japanese Woodblock Canvas Print

Hiroshige is celebrated for his rain-swept highways and misty mountain passes, but he was equally gifted at the miniature, and this delicate kacho-e, or “bird-and-flower picture,” shows why. A morning glory vine climbs the full height of the composition, its stem rising from a wash of pale blue at the base toward a cluster of deep cobalt blooms at the top. Clinging to the stem midway up is a single grasshopper, rendered with affectionate precision: antennae extended, legs gripping the vine with casual ease. A poem in flowing cursive script floats to the left, completing what is, in every sense, a small and perfect thing.

The print’s genius lies in its vertical energy. The eye travels upward with the vine, pausing at the grasshopper, continuing to the blooms: a journey that mirrors the plant’s own slow ambition. Hiroshige’s color choices are luminous: the teal-green leaves, the warm amber of a half-open bud, the saturated blue of the open flowers above, all set against the bare cream ground. Nothing is overworked. Each element has exactly the space it needs, and the grasshopper, so easy to overlook at first, becomes, on closer inspection, the quiet heart of the whole composition.

As a print, this piece has an elegant verticality that makes it particularly well-suited to narrower wall spaces (a hallway, a stairwell, the space beside a window) where its climbing energy can read fully. It suits collectors drawn to natural history art, Japanese botanical prints, or simply images that reward the patience of a second look.
