Charles Martin’s L’Arbre Merveilleux (The Marvelous Tree) transforms a Christmas tree into an enchanting stage for childhood imagination. Four children in festive costumes gather before an enormous, fantastically decorated tree, its dark branches covered with candles, toys, wrapped gifts, and whimsical ornaments. Martin’s simplified figures, delicate outlines, playful patterns, and carefully balanced areas of color give the scene an unmistakably early-20th-century elegance, while the combination of fashion illustration and fairy-tale imagery creates an unusually charming Christmas composition.

Created in 1914 for La Gazette du Bon Ton, the illustration was designed as a fashion plate showcasing children’s clothing for Christmas. The celebrated Parisian fashion magazine brought together leading artists and couturiers, using luxurious pochoir and lithographic techniques to turn fashion illustration into a sophisticated form of decorative art. Martin’s work occupies an especially interesting position between Art Nouveau and the emerging Art Deco aesthetic, combining flowing ornamental details with the simplified forms, strong silhouettes, and stylized geometry that would become increasingly characteristic of the 1920s.
