George Barbier’s L’Empire du monde presents a vision of 1920s haute couture in which fashion, luxury, and theatrical fantasy converge. A slender woman in an elegant black evening gown stands beside a crystal globe, her jeweled headband, elaborate earrings, bracelets, and vivid red accents providing flashes of color against the restrained palette. A sweeping fur-trimmed hem and pointed shoes complete the ensemble, while the globe and the model’s poised stance give the composition an almost allegorical sense of worldly sophistication.
Created for the celebrated French fashion journal Gazette du Bon Ton in 1924, the illustration showcases Barbier’s highly refined Art Deco style. His elongated figures, precise contours, sophisticated color harmonies, and decorative attention to costume epitomize the visual language of Jazz Age fashion illustration. The design depicts an evening gown by the legendary Parisian fashion house Worth and was published as Plate 30 in the sixth issue of the journal that year.
