Sidney H. Riesenberg’s Lend as They Fight was created in 1918 for the Third Federal Reserve District as part of the campaign to encourage Americans to purchase additional Liberty Bonds. The poster makes a direct comparison between the sacrifices of soldiers in combat and the financial contribution expected from civilians at home. Its concise message – “Lend as they fight” — frames buying bonds as the economic equivalent of military service, asking Americans to match the determination of those on the battlefield.
Two American soldiers occupy the center of the composition, one firing his rifle from behind a trench while a wounded comrade continues fighting with a pistol. Riesenberg surrounds them with a turbulent battlefield of barbed wire, smoke, earth, and brilliant bursts of yellow and orange, creating a striking contrast between the violence of combat and the calm, commanding typography above and below. The vivid palette and energetic brushwork give the scene an almost cinematic intensity, while the large blue lettering and dark border reinforce the poster’s graphic impact. The result is a particularly forceful example of Liberty Loan propaganda, using the visible physical sacrifice of soldiers to make the comparatively abstract act of purchasing a bond feel like a direct contribution to the war.
