Lend the Way They Fight – Buy Bonds to Your Utmost – E.M. Ashe (1918) – Patriotic WWI Poster Print

E. M. Ashe’s Lend the Way They Fight was created in 1918 as a World War I Liberty Bond poster, encouraging Americans on the home front to match the commitment and sacrifice of soldiers overseas. The slogan turns bond purchasing into a direct parallel with military service: if soldiers were expected to fight to their utmost, civilians were urged to lend to their utmost. The straightforward message is reinforced by an intensely dramatic battlefield scene designed to make the soldiers’ sacrifice impossible to ignore.

A wounded American infantryman struggles forward through a devastated landscape while another soldier advances behind him, rifle raised and ready to fire. Smoke and explosions fill the background, rendered in sweeping strokes of blue, gray, yellow, and orange that give the scene a tremendous sense of movement and violence. Ashe places the figures on a strong diagonal, making the central soldier appear to surge upward and forward against the chaos around him. The enormous black lettering at the top and the vivid red appeal at the bottom frame the painting like a theatrical announcement, while the contrast between Fight and Buy Bonds makes the poster’s central argument unmistakable.
