New York – Fly TWA – David Klein (1956) – Vintage Travel Poster Print

David Klein’s New York – Fly TWA transforms Times Square into a dazzling abstract composition of color, light, and geometry. Instead of depicting the city through conventional architectural realism, Klein reduces its towering buildings, illuminated billboards, traffic, and neon signs to overlapping blocks of electric blue, yellow, pink, red, and green, creating a kaleidoscopic impression of Manhattan after dark. The tiny airplane crossing the top of the composition connects this vibrant urban spectacle directly to the modern experience of air travel. Created for Trans World Airlines in 1956, the poster is a photolithograph and part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

The composition is specifically an abstracted view of Times Square, with recognizable signage and landmarks translated into Klein’s bold geometric vocabulary. The first printing, represented here, features a detailed TWA Constellation aircraft; later versions replaced it with a simplified jet silhouette as the airline entered the Jet Age. Klein’s brilliantly colored design became one of the most celebrated images in TWA’s mid-century advertising, capturing New York not as a static collection of landmarks but as a place of energy, movement, lights, and excitement.
