Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist and teacher whose work was distinguished by its bold linear compositions, rhythmic patterns, and fascination with natural forms. Ornament van Schubben transforms a simple ornamental motif into a study in geometry and repetition, reflecting the early 20th-century interest in reducing organic forms to elegant, highly structured designs.
The composition is built almost entirely from overlapping semicircular and scalloped shapes, creating the appearance of rows of scales or layered tiles. Strong black-and-white contrast gives the pattern a striking graphic quality, while the alternating arcs produce a sense of movement and depth despite the limited palette. The result is a sophisticated piece of decorative graphic art that bridges the organic pattern-making of Art Nouveau and the bold geometric sensibility associated with Art Deco.
