This early 19th-century ornamental design demonstrates the decorative vocabulary that would later influence the Art Deco movement. The composition combines classical motifs with a highly stylized approach to geometry and ornament, particularly in its use of a radiant semicircular form, repeated architectural shapes, and a laurel wreath. Laurel, traditionally associated with victory and achievement in classical art, provides an elegant ornamental counterpart to the dramatic black sun at the center.
The design is organized around a powerful fan-like sunburst, with deep green rays extending outward beneath a golden laurel wreath. A band of pale geometric ornament arches above it, while repeating oval and striped motifs frame the upper edge of the composition. The restrained palette of black, cream, ochre, terracotta, and green gives the design a rich period character, while its symmetry and bold geometric structure lend it an unexpectedly modern appearance.
