Saint Jerome in His Study – Albrecht Dürer (1514) – Renaissance Poster Print

Saint Jerome in His Study, created by Albrecht Dürer in 1514, is one of the artist’s most celebrated engravings and a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance printmaking. The work depicts Saint Jerome, the early Christian scholar and translator of the Bible, seated peacefully at his desk in a quiet study. Surrounded by books, writing materials, and the tools of scholarship, Jerome appears absorbed in his work, while the gentle light streaming through the windows creates an atmosphere of contemplation and devotion.

Dürer’s extraordinary attention to detail brings the intimate interior to life, from the carefully rendered wooden ceiling and patterned windows to the textures of the furniture and the sleeping animals resting in the foreground. The lion at Jerome’s feet refers to the famous legend of the saint taming a lion after removing a thorn from its paw. A small dog sleeps nearby, reinforcing the peaceful domestic atmosphere. The skull on the windowsill serves as a subtle memento mori, reminding the viewer of mortality amid Jerome’s life of study and spiritual reflection.

Calm, intimate, and remarkably intricate, Saint Jerome in His Study demonstrates Dürer’s extraordinary command of line and texture. Its combination of Christian symbolism, Renaissance scholarship, and beautifully rendered domestic surroundings makes it an especially compelling addition to collections featuring Albrecht Dürer, Northern Renaissance art, religious art, biblical and Christian subjects, medieval and Renaissance imagery, historic printmaking, and classical art.
