Leonardo da Vinci’s Saint John the Baptist, painted around 1513-1516, presents the biblical saint in an unusually enigmatic and almost otherworldly manner. Emerging from a deep, shadowed background, Saint John is shown from the waist up with long, flowing hair, a faint smile, and one hand raised toward heaven.
