See Him Through – Help us to Help the Boys – Burton Rice (1918) – Patriotic WWI Poster Print

Burton Rice’s See Him Through was created in 1918 for the National Catholic War Council and the Knights of Columbus as part of the United War Work Campaign. Issued for the campaign week beginning November 11, 1918, the poster appealed to Americans to support servicemen during the final days of World War I and the transition home. Its message, “Help Us to Help the Boys,” emphasizes the responsibility of civilians to provide practical and moral support for soldiers rather than allowing their service to end at the battlefield.

A mustached serviceman in the foreground gestures toward another soldier walking away toward the battlefield, creating a striking visual interpretation of the title See Him Through. The foreground figure’s outstretched arm almost literally guides the viewer’s eye toward his departing comrade, while explosions and smoke fill the landscape behind them. Strong blue, ochre, black, and white tones give the illustration a bold graphic quality, with the red lettering of the United War Work Campaign providing a final patriotic accent. The combination of expressive figures, simplified battlefield imagery, and unusually direct visual storytelling makes the poster a compelling example of American World War I propaganda centered on service, solidarity, and support for returning troops.
