Sheraton-Chicago Hotel – 505 North Michigan Avenue (1960–1979) – Vintage Travel Poster Print

This striking mid-century view of the Sheraton-Chicago Hotel transforms the Magnificent Mile into an exuberant composition of geometric architecture and saturated color. The hotel’s distinctive tower rises dramatically above Michigan Avenue, rendered in brilliant yellow and coral against a deep midnight-blue sky, while the surrounding buildings are reduced to angular blocks of pink, turquoise, green, and orange. Tiny automobiles and pedestrians animate the street below, and the stylized neon forms at left add another layer of visual energy. The combination of exaggerated perspective, flattened architectural forms, and intensely contrasting colors gives the image a distinctly mid-century modern, almost Pop Art character.

The Sheraton-Chicago occupied 505 North Michigan Avenue, overlooking one of the city’s most prominent commercial boulevards. The hotel had been operated by Sheraton since 1947, and a major expansion completed in 1961 added a 26-story tower immediately north of the original building, creating the complex depicted here. During this period the hotel was known for its extensive amenities and its Kon-Tiki Ports Polynesian restaurant complex, while its location placed guests directly on Chicago’s increasingly fashionable Magnificent Mile. The property remained the Sheraton-Chicago until 1978, making the early 1960s through the late 1970s the appropriate period for this colorful architectural postcard.
