Solar Polar Spacecraft Concept – NASA (1978) – Space Age Poster Print

This dramatic NASA concept illustrates the proposed Solar Polar Mission, a joint NASA–European Space Agency effort intended to send two spacecraft above and below the plane of the planets’ orbits and observe the Sun from its polar regions. Released by NASA in May 1978, the artwork shows the spacecraft departing Earth aboard the Space Shuttle’s Solid Spinning Upper Stage, with Jupiter serving as a gravitational slingshot to redirect them onto trajectories passing over the Sun’s north and south poles. The mission was planned for launch in 1983 and would have been managed for NASA by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The concept is a particularly evocative snapshot of late-1970s space exploration planning. At the time, virtually every planetary spacecraft had remained close to the ecliptic plane, leaving the regions above and below it largely unexplored. The Solar Polar Mission was designed to study the Sun’s corona, solar wind, magnetic environment, cosmic rays, and the three-dimensional structure of the heliosphere from a completely new perspective. Although the original proposal evolved and was ultimately transformed into the later Ulysses mission, this 1978 artwork captures the ambitious scientific thinking of the period, when the Space Shuttle and increasingly sophisticated gravity-assist trajectories were opening new possibilities for exploring the solar system.
