Soyuz TMA-09M Spacecraft – NASA (2013) – Space Age Poster Print

This detailed NASA photograph shows the Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft, part of the long-running Russian Soyuz program that served as one of the principal crew-transport systems for the International Space Station. The image highlights the spacecraft’s docking mechanism and intricate exterior hardware, including its circular docking interface, connectors, insulation, and maneuvering equipment. Soyuz TMA-09M launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on May 29, 2013, carrying Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, and European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano to the ISS.

The mission was part of Expedition 36/37, and the spacecraft remained attached to the station for more than five months, serving as the crew’s return vehicle in the event of an emergency. During its stay, TMA-09M was also relocated from the Rassvet module to the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module before departing the ISS on November 10, 2013. The image is a fascinating look at the engineering behind the routine but extraordinarily important process of connecting a crewed spacecraft to a permanently inhabited orbital laboratory, a technology and operational capability that had by this point become a defining feature of the International Space Station era.
