Moriz Jung’s Tete a Tete on the 968th Floor of a Skyscraper is a wonderfully whimsical vision of early aviation and futuristic city life. A suitor rides an improbable monoplane high above a nighttime cityscape, with the woman leaning out from a skyscraper window to exchange flowers with her airborne companion. Jung’s bold turquoise, yellow, black, and white palette, simplified architecture, and sweeping lines give the scene a distinctly modern graphic character, while the absurdly high “968th floor” turns technological optimism into playful fantasy.
Created in 1911, the work belongs to Jung’s celebrated series of satirical Wiener Werkstatte postcards devoted to the strange new world of early flight. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the aircraft is based on the real Bleriot monoplane: French aviator Louis Bleriot had made the first flight across the English Channel in 1909, and Jung adapted the recognizable aircraft into this humorous airborne romance. The Wiener Werkstatte published the postcard as no. 340, part of a larger series in which Jung transformed contemporary aviation technology into fantastical and often absurd scenarios.
