Texas – American Airlines – Martin D. Glanzman & Joseph Charles Parker (1953) – Vintage Travel Poster Print

Martin D. Glanzman and Joseph Charles Parker’s Texas distills the identity of the Lone Star State into a striking mid-century composition. Four enormous Texas Longhorn heads dominate the image, rendered in bold red, yellow, gray, and blue against a warm terracotta background. An American Airlines aircraft crosses between the cattle, while finely drawn oil derricks, electrical towers, ranch imagery, and a city skyline weave through the composition. The contrast between the monumental Longhorns and the tiny aircraft and industrial details creates a wonderfully graphic portrait of Texas, balancing the state’s ranching heritage with its modern economic and technological character. The Museum of Modern Art catalogs the work as American Airlines To Texas, created by Glanzman-Parker around 1953.

Created during the postwar expansion of commercial aviation, the poster presents American Airlines as a gateway to a Texas defined by both tradition and rapid modernization. The Longhorn was an instantly recognizable symbol of the state’s cattle-ranching and frontier heritage, while the oil rigs and growing urban skyline allude to the industries and cities transforming Texas in the mid-20th century. Glanzman and Parker’s combination of oversized silhouettes, restrained line drawings, and a bold limited palette gives the work a particularly sophisticated modernist character. It was produced as a silkscreen, a technique well suited to the poster’s large areas of vivid color and crisp graphic forms.
