Nicolas Poussin’s The Abduction of the Sabine Women is a monumental history painting drawn from the legendary founding of Rome. According to the ancient Roman story, Romulus arranged a festival to bring the neighboring Sabines to Rome, where Roman men seized the Sabine women as wives. Poussin depicts the moment the violence erupts, with Romulus standing at the left and raising his cloak as the signal for the Roman warriors to begin. The painting was created in Rome around 1633-34 and is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Poussin transforms the chaotic episode into an extraordinarily ordered composition. Figures twist, struggle, flee, and reach across the canvas in a complex series of intersecting gestures and diagonals. The vivid blue, red, and ochre garments stand out against the monumental architecture of ancient Rome, while the dramatic clouds and carefully posed figures heighten the theatrical quality of the scene. Poussin’s study of classical antiquity is particularly evident in the Roman armor and architecture, reflecting his deep engagement with the art and culture of ancient Rome.

A defining example of 17th-century French classical painting, The Abduction of the Sabine Women brings the grandeur of ancient history to the modern interior. Its monumental scale, architectural setting, and dramatic human movement make it particularly striking in a library, study, office, or traditional living space. For collectors of classical art, Roman history, mythology, and grand European history painting, it offers an especially powerful centerpiece.
