Peter Paul Rubens depicts one of the most famous stories from classical mythology: Paris, prince of Troy, is asked to judge which of the three goddesses (Juno, Minerva, or Venus) is the most beautiful. Venus, accompanied by Cupid, ultimately wins the golden apple, setting in motion the events that would lead to the Trojan War.

The three goddesses are presented against a lush pastoral landscape, while Mercury and Paris occupy the right side of the composition.
