Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, painted around 1495-1498, is one of the most celebrated masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. Created for the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, the monumental scene depicts the moment when Christ announces that one of his disciples will betray him. Leonardo captures the immediate emotional reaction of the apostles, arranging their gestures, expressions, and interactions into a remarkably unified and dramatic composition centered on Christ.
The painting demonstrates Leonardo’s extraordinary mastery of perspective, composition, and human expression. Christ occupies the exact center of the architectural space, while the converging lines of the room reinforce his importance and draw the viewer into the scene. The apostles are arranged in four groups of three, each responding differently to Christ’s announcement, creating a sense of movement and psychological tension across the otherwise orderly composition. Leonardo’s use of light, perspective, and carefully observed gestures transformed the traditional Last Supper subject into one of the defining achievements of Renaissance art.
A landmark of Western art and one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous works, The Last Supper remains an enduring symbol of Italian Renaissance painting. Its combination of religious subject matter, architectural perspective, expressive figures, and innovative composition makes it a striking addition to collections of Renaissance art, religious paintings, and historic masterpieces. This iconic Leonardo da Vinci painting brings the drama and visual sophistication of one of the world’s most recognizable works of art into the home.
