Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s The Little Tower of Babel is one of the great masterpieces of Northern Renaissance painting, depicting the biblical Tower of Babel as a colossal architectural project teeming with workers, craftsmen, merchants, and activity. Rather than presenting the tower as an impossibly distant monument, Bruegel imagines it as a vast construction site, filled with scaffolding, cranes, ramps, workshops, and hundreds of tiny human figures.

The tower dominates the landscape, its circular structure rising dramatically toward the heavens while gradually becoming more unfinished and precarious near the summit. Bruegel’s extraordinary attention to architectural detail gives the painting an almost documentary quality, while the busy harbor and sprawling landscape surrounding it emphasize the enormous scale of the undertaking.
