In late eighteenth-century Edo, beauty was a public obsession: debated, ranked, and celebrated in poetry, gossip, and print. Kitagawa Utamaro channeled that fascination into one of his most iconic works: a portrait of three women who were, by contemporary consensus, the most celebrated beauties of their day. The subjects, believed to be the teahouse waitress Naniwaya Okita, the toothpick seller Takashima Hisa, and the rice-cake seller Tomimoto Toyohina, were genuine celebrities, recognizable to anyone walking the streets of Edo. Utamaro made them immortal.
The palette is characteristic of Utamaro at his finest: pale, powdered skin rendered in the softest blush tones, robes detailed in slate blue, warm terracotta, and delicate pattern work. Every hairpin, every fold of fabric, speaks to the meticulous craft of the woodblock medium, and to Utamaro’s unmatched eye for the texture of femininity as Edo understood and idealized it.
