Also from the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit (known in Japanese as Sanka Hakuu, and informally as Black Fuji) is one of the series’ most electrifying images, and one of its least discussed. Where the Great Wave overwhelms and Red Fuji serenely glows, this print crackles with violence. The lower half of the composition is consumed by an impenetrable black storm — no landscape, no ground, no human presence — from which two bolts of orange lightning split outward with jagged, angular force. Above the darkness, Fuji rises in deep crimson and shadow, its summit catching the last of the light before the storm swallows everything below.

The print operates through pure contrast. The blackness of the lower half is total and absolute, making the mountain’s red mass and the pale sky above feel almost shockingly vivid by comparison. Billowing white clouds edged in deep blue frame the upper register, their decorative curves a deliberate counterpoint to the raw geometry of the lightning below. Hokusai understood that Fuji was not merely a beautiful mountain but a force ancient, indifferent, and occasionally terrifying, and this is the print in which he makes that case most directly.
