Created in 1943 by photographer and designer Howard Liberman, “United We Win” was produced for the U.S. War Manpower Commission during World War II as a powerful statement of industrial unity and shared national purpose. The poster reflects the wartime push to mobilize every segment of American society behind the Allied war effort, especially within factories and defense production.
The composition features two workers, one Black and one White, collaborating side by side beneath a massive American flag while assembling aircraft components. At a time when segregation and racial inequality remained deeply embedded in American life, the image carried a deliberate message: victory in war depended upon cooperation across racial lines in factories, shipyards, and industrial plants.
Unlike many illustrated propaganda posters of the era, “United We Win” uses a documentary-style photographic approach that gives the image an immediate sense of realism and urgency. The clean typography and monumental flag backdrop reinforce themes of national solidarity, labor, and sacrifice.
Today, the poster is recognized as one of the most historically significant American home front images of World War II. It remains especially notable for its portrayal of interracial cooperation in wartime industry and is widely collected for its connections to labor history, civil rights history, military propaganda, and twentieth-century American photography.
