Nathaniel Greene’s Victory! Congress Passes Daylight Saving Bill was created in 1918 to celebrate the adoption of daylight saving time in the United States during World War I. The measure was introduced largely as a wartime energy-conservation effort, with the goal of reducing the need for artificial lighting. Sponsored by the United Cigar Stores Company, the poster presents the new law as a patriotic victory, linking the additional hour of daylight with increased productivity and the wartime home front.
Uncle Sam stands beside an enormous clock, dramatically turning its hands while a clock-headed figure leaps for joy beneath him. The figure’s clock face announces “One Hour of Extra Daylight,” while Uncle Sam holding a hoe connects the new schedule to gardening and agricultural work. Greene uses a bold red, white, and navy palette, oversized typography, and simplified cartoon-like figures to give the poster an energetic, almost humorous character. The combination of patriotic imagery, clocks, and wartime home-front messaging makes it a particularly unusual example of American World War I poster art.
