This striking vintage view presents the Eiffel Tower rising dramatically above the grounds of the Champ de Mars, with the Grand Palais-style exhibition architecture visible through its monumental lower arch. The Eiffel Tower had already become one of Paris’s defining landmarks by the time of the 1900 Exposition Universelle, when millions of visitors came to the city and the tower served as a spectacular symbol of modern engineering. A closely related photograph of the tower by the Parisian studio Neurdein Freres is documented by Paris Musees as dating to 1900 and having been photographed during the exposition; the brothers’ extensive photographic work helped record Paris and its architecture during this period.
