Woman Holding a Fan – Katsushika Hokusai (1830) – Japanese Woodblock Canvas Print

Two decades after his earlier treatment of the same subject, Hokusai returns to the figure of a woman with a fan, and the difference is revelatory. Where the 1810 painting was formal and monumental, this later work is loose, atmospheric, almost improvisational. The figure turns inward, glancing down with a pensive air, her blue checked kimono rendered in confident, gestural brushwork rather than controlled line. Wisps of ink wash drift around her like weather. It is the work of an artist who has moved beyond demonstration and into something more instinctive.

The composition breathes in a way the earlier painting does not. The pale ground is left largely open, with soft grey clouds barely suggested behind the figure; negative space used not as absence but as mood. Flashes of blush pink at the collar, hem, and fan provide warmth against the cool blue of the robe, while the dark obi is sketched with an almost calligraphic looseness. Every element feels chosen for feeling rather than precision, and the result is a figure that seems genuinely caught in a moment of private thought.

Paired or displayed alongside the 1810 version, this piece offers a fascinating window into Hokusai’s artistic evolution, but it stands entirely on its own as well. Its sketchlike spontaneity and soft palette make it well-suited to quieter, more contemplative spaces.
