Woman Holding a Fan – Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1793) – Japanese Woodblock Canvas Print

This print belongs to Utamaro’s celebrated series Ten Physiognomies of Women, an ambitious study in female psychology as much as portraiture. Rather than idealized beauty, Utamaro was after something more elusive: the distinct inner life readable in a face, a posture, a held object. Here, a woman in a deep black outer robe holds a round fan loosely at her side, her gaze directed slightly away, expression poised somewhere between alertness and reserve. She is not performing for the viewer. She is simply, compellingly, herself.

The technical execution is extraordinary even by Utamaro’s standards. The black robe is rendered through dense, fine parallel lines that convey the weight and sheen of the fabric with remarkable tactility, punctuated by scattered white chrysanthemum crests. Beneath it, a sage green under-robe patterned with delicate floral motifs adds quiet depth to the composition. The face, by contrast, is almost stark — a few precise lines, a suggestion of color at the lips — and all the more powerful for it. Utamaro understood that restraint, not detail, is what makes a face feel inhabited.

As a print, this piece has the quiet authority of a great portrait: the kind that holds your attention without announcing why. The near-monochrome palette, relieved by soft sage and warm skin tones, makes it versatile enough to work in almost any interior. It suits collectors drawn to Utamaro’s psychological depth, or anyone looking for figurative work that is elegant without being decorative.
