Yours Not to Do and Die – Yours But to Go and Buy Victory Bonds was created in 1918 as part of the American campaign to encourage civilians to purchase Victory Bonds during the final year of World War I. The slogan cleverly adapts the famous line from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s The Charge of the Light Brigade – “Theirs not to reason why, / Theirs but to do and die” – turning a reference to battlefield sacrifice into an appeal for civilian financial support. The poster emphasizes the distinction between the soldiers who faced combat and the civilians who could contribute by purchasing government bonds.

A line of American infantrymen charges forward through the battlefield, their bayonets fixed as they advance across the composition. The soldiers are rendered in dark, earthy tones against a mustard-yellow field, while the large black and red lettering gives the lower half of the poster a particularly bold graphic presence. The deliberately limited palette and simplified forms create an almost woodcut-like appearance, while the contrast between “not to do and die” and “go and BUY” gives the design its memorable rhetorical punch. The result is a striking example of World War I bond propaganda that uses literary allusion, dramatic military imagery, and strong typography to connect the sacrifice of soldiers with the financial contribution expected from civilians.
