Claude Monet’s The Magpie (c. 1868-69) is a luminous winter landscape and one of the artist’s most celebrated early studies of snow and light. A solitary black magpie perches on a simple wooden gate, its dark silhouette standing out against an expansive field of snow, bare trees, and distant farm buildings.
Rather than treating snow as simply white, Monet builds the landscape from subtle blues, violets, pinks, and warm earth tones. The long shadows cast across the snow and the delicate variations in the winter sky demonstrate his growing interest in the fleeting effects of natural light: an approach that would become central to Impressionism.
